INDICATION

  • Anovulation (including polycystic ovarian disease), and infrequent ovulation, if other treatment has failed.
  • Idiopathic (unexplained) infertility.
  • Cervical mucus hostility (positive PCT)
  • Mild male factor infertility (10-20 mln/ml, 30-50% progressive motion A + B)
  • Severe male factor infertility (IUI donor only).
  • Endometriosis

TESTS

Before you begin superovulation you will have to have current results of:
  • seminogram
  • USG examination of uterine and ovaries
  • Hormones concentrations (FSH, LH, Estradiol in 1-2 day of cycle, prolactine, THS, Testosterone)
  • Ureaplasma, Mycoplasma, Chlamydia tests
  • Pap smear

PROCEDURE

The IUI is done approximately 36 to 48 hours after the injection of recombinant HCG. The male partner is required to produce a specimen of semen in the Collection Room within the Clinic, into a clean sterile wide-mouthed contained labelled with the male and female partners’ names and medical number. The semen specimen is taken into the laboratory where it is washed and prepared according to the laboratory procedure. You are placed in the embryo transfer chair, and the uterine cervix is exposed with a sterile bivalve speculum lubricated with sterile normal saline. Any mucus at the cervix is swabbed away carefully with a sterile swab dipped in sterile normal saline. The sperm preparation, which is the final sperm wash resuspended in 0.6 ml of medium is brought from the laboratory in a tube labelled with the female partner’s name. The name on the tube is checked with the patient and the specimen is then drawn up into a sterile single-use plastic insemination catheter attached to a sterile 1 ml plastic syringe. The catheter tip is then placed into the external os of the cervix and threaded gently along the cervical canal and into the uterine cavity. Once the catheter tip is within the uterine cavity, the sperm preparation is injected slowly. Your partner may accompany you when the insemination procedure is carried out. Following insemination you have the option to rest for a few minutes before you leave the Clinic.

RESULTS

The success rates vary according to the female partner’s age and according to the cause of infertility. Efficiency can be measured only if we proceed 3 IUI. We normally do not recommend more than 4-6 cycles of insemination as only a few pregnancies will result by continuing treatment after that. If we do not succeed after 5 – 6 inseminations so you will be qualified to in vitro fertilization (IVF).
